Update for I1 Haplogroup FAIRBAIRNs

With one of the recent BigY sales at FamilyTreeDNA, the opportunity was taken to test four of the Lineage 1e FAIRBAIRNs, and analyse their results at yFull.com.

The latest version (5.04) of the yFull tree now shows that this has resulted in the creation of a new branch of the tree underneath I-Y7277 (which was estimated by yFull as having been formed 3400 ybp TMRCA 3100 ybp) which is where they are currently shown on FTDNA.


The new branch is I-Y32666, with an estimated formation date of 3100 ybp but a TMRCA (time to most recent common ancestor) of 225 ybp, ie 1725.

The DNASurnames Haplogroup tree which shows yDNA tree branches, along with line patriarchs and tested participants (if approved to do so, has been updated (http://dnasurnames.info/dchaplogroupi.htm#a20)

We believe, from papertrails, ySTR testing and a bit of "a miracle happens here" for one or two of the links, that all four tested descend from John FAIRBAIRN and Bessie FLINT whose children were baptized at Melrose, Roxburghshire from  1729 to 1740, and one at Smailholm in 1741.

So how much earlier were all the branches for the matching I1 Fairbairns formed?

That will take an interested party, or two, from any of other groups at
to also test BigY and analyse the results at yFull.

Small steps...

As mentioned in the last post it would be good if the Fairbairn Project could determine when the matching Haplogroup I1 lines diverged.
Perhaps we're all ancient ELLIOTs after all?
Do remember that the ELLIOTs in the FAIRBAIRN project are a very very small subset of the overall ELLIOT project.

Three BigY tests were ordered during the recent sales, all in Lineage 1e and believed to be descended from John & Bessie (FLINT) FAIRBAIRN (who married about 1728 Melrose, Roxburghshire).

There are hints that the first is nearly completed processing as a couple of BigY match emails have been received, even though the dashboard for the kit (F-16) shows "awaiting results".

Although the Haplogroup on his dashboard hasn't yet been changed from I-M253, his Haplotree/SNPs does however now show he is positive for
> Z141 > FGC22406 > Y7277
which YFull.com has at:
https://www.yfull.com/tree/I-Y7277/
a branch it shows in v5.01 of their I1 tree as forming 3300 ybp, TMRCA 2200 ybp (years before present, "present" = 1950).
Intriguing that the only three countries listed against those already analyzed are TSI, Italy and Hungary - but then the most youthful listed subbranch has a TMRCA (time to most recent common ancestor) estimated at 1500 ybp (ie around 450AD) so quite a way back from 1728.

We had already assumed the Z141 level from the prior SNP testing of our I1 group guinea-pig (F-17) who had tested positive for Z141 - so that branch was assumed to apply to all in the group.
He was also negative for two of the then known downstream sub groups of: F2642 and Z2535.
At which time specific SNP testing had ended.
No SNP packs or BigY were available at that time - how fast things change in this world.

Hopefully with this, and the remaining two results, once all analyzed at YFull, may create a more recent FAIRBAIRN sub branch.

For any of those in the I1 matching groups of the FAIRBAIRN project, be they FAIRBAIRNs, ELLIOTs or FARRIS or ... , FTDNA do offer both an I1-Z140 SNP pack which would quickly position any of the matching I1 group on the tree under I1-Z140 without the expense of the BigY test, but also without the contribution to science BigY gives.


This SNP pack includes the above FGC22406 sub branch, along with four successive branches.
and individual SNP tests for around this area.


So the more adventurous of you may wish to gamble by simply checking if you too are FGC22406 by ordering an individual SNP.

If you are considering doing BigY in the future - wait, save your pennies and do just that, both of the above would be superfluous.

If you do wish to explore this area of DNA testing please check with either your I1 Haplogroup project or the Fairbairn project administrator before ordering to make sure you are getting an appropriate test for your individual situation.

Still Z141

We have not yet managed to find which sub-branch of the I Haplogroup tree that the Lineage 1 FAIRBAIRNs belong to.
Our SNP test for F2642 came back negative.
Comparing the ISOGG haplogroup I tree and that on FamilyTreeDNA for our SNP testing guineapig, John (F-17), we appear to not have that many options left.
Patience called for to reach much more forward to present day down this branch.

Continuing to explore the Y-SNP tree of mankind

With the current DNA Day/Arbor day sale at FamilyTree DNA we are taking the opportunity to try and find the next step down towards the present on the I1 haplogroup tree.

You may recall that our selected representative, John F-17, had advanced the matching group of FAIRBAIRNs down the I1 tree to Z141+ (was then I1a2a1a but appears now to be I1d...) but was negative for Z2535, one of the next branches on the tree.
We've selected F2642 as the next to test for.

The sale is also 20% off on Y-DNA37 tests, so any direct male line FAIRBAIRN would be most welcome to join the project to see which family they most closely relate too, or provide a new slant on a new group.
Any Yorkshire FAIRBURNs out there?

Remember that although Y-DNA testing is the most effective way to confirm that line A matches line B, those of us that aren't direct male line FAIRBAIRNs can still contribute to this giant genetic jigsaw by using autosomal testing - FamilyFinder with FamilyTreeDNA or the Ancestry DNA test (and later transferring results to FamilyTree DNA to get the best of both worlds).

Still journeying to the present

Those following the FAIRBAIRN DNA journey down from ancestral Adam (last post) to now, as opposed to back from the present, may be interested to know that the next step along the way has been completed.

Our selected representative for these tests, John (F-17) has had his SNP result returned as Z141+ which still has a few further options available in the march toward the present from the 3-4000 Years Before Present (YBP) this appears to be.

See the branching for this tree on both the ISOGG Haplogroup I1 tree, or for this portion of the tree, the more up to date files for the I1 Haplogroup project on Kenneth Nordtvedt's web pages - select "Tree for I1 Z60+".

We are embarking on this aspect of DNA testing to see if we can gain any further insights as to when the assorted matching branches we know we have actually diverged from a common ancestor.
But have a long way to go yet, both in selective testing, and in science finding more branches on the tree.

Less deep ancestry?

Further to the posts on Deeper Ancestry below, a candidate has been "volunteered" as our guinea pig to represent the FAIRBAIRNs in Haplogroup I1 and test his way down the I1 tree towards present day.
We began with the recommended Z59 SNP and now await the results.
Unfortunately the I1 haplogroup is less well served than some others by this sort of testing.
Most of the more recent discoveries of tree branches seem to be in other haplogroups, some groupings of which nearly make it down into genealogical timeframes.
Let's see how far we can get towards present day.

Deeper Ancestry ctd

Further to the earlier Deeper Ancestry post I have been advised that given the characteristics of our STR results that the best SNP test to begin exploring our I1 tree branches would be Z59.

The best way to proceed seems therefore for a representative kit to be chosen to be our guinea pig for exploring the FAIRBAIRN deeper ancestry, which I as admin will do, and will discuss with the participant concerned how we go about this.

The price for individual SNP testing went up within hours of the earlier post and is now $39 per test.

There is no real point in more than one kit upgrading for this, so if at all interested, please donate to the general fund instead as that will allow us to progress down the I1 haplogroup tree systematically and cost effectively with all members benefiting from the findings.

Deeper ancestry?

Health warning:
This post contains DNA terms - check the ISOGG Wiki glossary  for further explanation of the teminology, and my amateur interpretations of results - I welcome further explanations, suggestions from those more knowledgeable.
 
As those following the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project already know, the majority of the FAIRBAIRNs tested to date match, and belong to haplogroup I1
This grouping indicates our deeper ancestry, ie pre-surnames, 1000s of years ago, instead of the  genealogical timeframes covered by our charts, and the results shown on the DNA results page.
(The haplogroup link above takes you to WikiPedia, which explains I1 diverged from I about 15,000 years ago).

A 2013 (and rapidly evolving) haplogroup tree for I exists on the ISOGG pages.
All we know currently about our matching I1 participants is that we are all still in the generic top level bar one of I1, terminal SNP of M253.
Two of our particpants have determined that we are "L22-, M21-, M227-, M253+, M72-, P109-, P259-", which I interpret as ruling out subclades of I1a1 and I1a2.

One participant has also joined the I1 yDNA Haplogroup project to see what else we may learn.

I had hopes that we may, eventually, find how far back the common ancestor was for the FAIRBAIRNs and our matching ELLIOTs.
As yet however, there isn't much in the way of timescales associated with the deeper haplogroup tree, so that is probably a rather vain hope, particularly as we only have STR results in the main, and only the above indication of where we don't fit on the tree.

The participant who has joined the I1-yDNA project has been placed in the (very large) sub category of  "I1 generic (I1-AS (generic)) consider ordering Z58, Z63 & DF29"
which SNPs would determine whether the subclades were I1a3, I1a4 or generic I1a respectively.
Only a very small step towards a potential goal of when the ancestry diverged for the FAIRBAIRN/ELLIOTs.
Should one each of say the ELLIOT and FAIRBAIRNs nearer the modal by STR results be willing to upgrade for the advanced tests for the above three individual SNPs, please do contact me (see footer of most project pages). There is no point in more than one or two participants upgrading as results at this level should be very similar, if not identical - each individual SNP test appears to cost $US29.

I had considered suggesting a Geno 2.0 test for this aspect, transferring results to Family Tree DNA, but there appear to be problems with Z58 (and Z62) in the Geno 2.0 chip, and the transfer of results has not yet been fully ironed out. So more cost effective and reliable to simply test for additional SNPs as and when desired/indicated should anyone be curious about our deeper ancestry.

Phylogram for Lineage 1

With the growing number of matches within the haplogroup I1 (Lineage 1) it is definitely time a pretty summary chart was created.


The version attached to the Lineage 1 forebear has an image map, so have an explore by clicking on the line labels.
The DNA analysis page has had a bit of a review/update.
It now also includes the radial tree version, below, of the above phylogram, and also a Genetic Distances table.

It was an interesting exercise examining the generated results and comparing them to those presented in the existing DNA Signature charts.
The latter are generated manually via visual analysis of the result tables, genetic differences provided by Family Tree DNA, and from known/suspected paper trails.
A couple of the generated results in the phylogram were a surprise, but mostly the two methods seem to have agreed.
One thing it did show is that the ELLIOTTs branched from the FAIRBAIRNs, not the other way around.
All of the above applies only to Lineage 1 (Haplogroup I1) as the other groups do not, as yet, have enough participants to provide many matches.
