A snippet there, a snippet here. So are trees pieced together.
the importance of examining originals, not just indexes was reinforced this week when Rosemary provided the snippet from the marriage of George Henry FAIRBAIRN and Jane SMITH - they were 2nd cousins, Jane's mother being an Ellen FAIRBAIRN.
Ellen turns out to be the daughter of Andrew FAIRBAIRN and Margaret HENDERSON.
This is yet another piece of corroboration that George Henry's father John was indeed the son of William FAIRBAIRN, schoolmaster of Bowden then Galashiels.
The One Name Study pages have been updated to include the key participants in the FAIRBAIRN and SMITH relationships teazed out from the above.
For all interested in the FAIRBAIRN (and variants) surname - this blog is the project diary for both the One Name Study and the DNA Project.

Francis, Andrew and James
The One Name Study pages have been uploaded to include research from 2009 (this GenForum post refers) re Andrew FAIRBAIRN in Ontario, married to Eliza Ann HAGERMAN.
The activity was prompted by the realisation that another researcher (John) needed to be transferred from the older DNA Surnames researcher list to the now current list on the One Name Study pages, which now also include John's ancestors Francis & Isabella (HENDERWICK) FAIRBAIRN, a family often shown as Andrew's parents but without any supporting evidence.
Would be good to get a direct male line FAIRBAIRN from Andrew's line to represent it in the FAIRBAIRN DNA project, and one from the line of the Ednam blacksmiths line that very circumstantial evidence may link to the Fogo smith believed to be Andrew's father - James, married to Margaret HOG. And/or any evidence placing Andrew with his correct family.

Tweaks finished? Two new lineages added
The One Name Study Lineage pages have been fully reloaded.
They should now include all the person information (as opposed to place) that was once on the Analysis section, and all of the Researcher, Lineage, and Wanted! information that was in the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project supplementary pages.
The recent changes index is therefore a little fuller than normal, with many of the entries merely being there because of the above shift having been completed.
There are some textual alterations as the rationale behind some of the linkages has been reviewed and an attempt made to make some of the conclusions a bit clearer - no doubt more to come.
New to the pages are the trees of :
Wish we could find one for the South African family of John son of James and Agnes (BRACK) FAIRBAIRN.

FAIRBAIRN/CLINKSCALE ++
The rest of the DNA results are in for the second representative for the family of William & Alison (CLINKSCALE) FAIRBAIRN of Bedshiel, Greenlaw - a 36/37 match between Godfrey(F-48) and Neil(F-4).
The rationalisation and linking between the DNA project and the One Name Study continues apace, so keep an eye on their respective recent changes indexes.
Given the DNA testing discounts available right now, if you belong to any of the families listed on the Wanted! page, and are a direct male line FAIRBAIRN, do please consider joining the project and helping towards the jigsaw. Would be an excellent time to get representatives for the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRNs, and what about the family of George and Jane (LAW) FAIRBAIRN (recently added to the pages given the two contemporary soldier Andrews have now been "sorted").

4th: New twigs
Given the dna sale at the moment, it seemed time to include another pedigree on the Patriarchs page.
A brief stub has been added for the family of James & Margaret (HOG) FAIRBAIRN of Whinkerstones, Fogo, and their assumed children Andrew and Mary in Ontario.
It may, or may not, be significant that in 1841, James was not the only FAIRBAIRN with a smithing type job recorded as being in Fogo Muir.
Also found was Thomas, engine fitter, who was the son of Charles & Agnes (MARK) FAIRBAIRN of Stitchel. Thomas appears in later censuses with his nephew John in the household. John being the son of cabinet maker Robert & Elspeth (LEDGERWOOD) FAIRBAIRN - so that patriarch summary has also had a couple of tweaks.
Should a representative for the line of the Ontario Andrew be found, he should match our F-35, a descendant of Charles, if this speculation is accurate.
Any takers while the discounts still apply?

Our confirmed paper trail
The dna signature for the line of James & Helen (GOODFELLOW) FAIRBAIRN, is well on the way to being confirmed with the preliminary results (12 markers) in for Tom (F-13), a descendant of their son George & Electa (COWDREY) FAIRBAIRN showing a 12/12 match with Doug (F-6) a descendant of James & Helen's son Andrew.
