Wanted: Cockburnspath Fairbairn line tester(s)

Most of the links below take you to WikiTree - all help in documenting descendants welcome.

It is a free, collaborative tree, great privacy controls for the living, and very DNA friendly.
Whatever test you have taken, IF you are comfortable being in an online tree, connected to your ancestors, then join WikiTree, input enough of your family to connect up to any already there, and show what DNA tests you have taken.
Regardless of any DNA tests, why not help the Fairbairn project by expanding your line down at least a little bit towards present day?

One of the goals for the Fairbairn DNA project for this year  (2023) is to further clarify the DNA groups for the Cockburnspath line down from George Fairbairn (married Christian Bookles).

Our sole yDNA tested representative for this line is a descendant of James Fairbairn b. 1793 (married Jean Anderson) and son of John (married Grizel Johnston).
Here's the list of yDNA descendants for John currently on WikiTree - quite a gap down to present day and a mere drop in the ocean of the actual descendants!

The Fairbairn Surname DNA project is currently looking for direct male line descendants down from any of James' brothers to validate the DNA signature back as far as John for starters.

- David b. 1787 (married Alison Anderson)

- Walter b. 1802

are currently the only two descendants connected to John on WikiTree.

You can help.
The project has a y37 DNA test available for a suitable candidate, with the possibility of an upgrade should the results be as hoped.
Contact the Fairbairn Surname DNA project administrator with the details of the direct male line concerned to enquire.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Summary DNA results

The Summary DNA results page on the WorldFamilyNetwork was included in the recent updates to the related FAIRBAIRN pages (One Name Study and DNA pages).

The summary result page now includes the matching FARRIS representatives, who appear to create a bridge between Lineage 1a and all their matches sharing marker 391 = 10 but marker 520 = 20, and Lineage 1e who have 391 = 9 and 520 = 21.

It also has more of the results received to date for the descendant of Robert the Thames waterman, now shifted up in the grid next to the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRN family spot on the modal for all the Haplogroup I1 matches.

Spot on the modal

The final results are in for Bill (F-53) our representative for the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRNs, which lineage is now awarded the prize for being closest to the modal over all of our Haplogroup I1  FAIRBAIRNs (who all match to some extent) - you can't get closer than spot on!
Up to know everyone had at least one marker different, several only on faster mutating markers.

This has prompted a review, and therefore a renumbering, of the I1 haplogroup lineages, which renumbering is incomplete insofar as the One Name Study pages haven't yet been updated to reflect this.

DNA Surnames  has been reloaded with the above update, but does not as yet include a review of the signature charts, and does include a re-ordering of the overall marker grid to reflect the groupings based on slower mutating markers.

This update includes a few more of the older results being reviewed against their current genetic distance results, given that Family Tree DNA revised their matching methods, and the opportunity has been taken to trim the genetic distance matches back to just the more relevant/closer ones.

A few more broken links have been repaired - not doubt more to come.

Two matches

The previously referred to DNA match between the tree of William FAIRBAIRN, schoolmaster of Galashiels, represented in the DNA project by Michael (F-23), and that of John FAIRBARNES of Winlaton/Swalwell, Durham, represented by CJ (F-54) has been confirmed as an excellent match, 66 markers out of 67, so any shared ancestor should be well within genealogical timeframes.
Now to find the paper trail.
Jury still well out as to whether or not that means CJ's origins are Scottish, or those of John & Helen (ANDERSON) FAIRBAIRN, William's parents, were actually English!

The other match that is shaping up rather well is that of our representative for the Cockburnspath family of John & Helen (GRIEVE) FAIRBAIRN, who is an exact match, 47/47 so far, to the line of James & Helen (CAMPBELL) FAIRBAIRN, represented in the DNA project by David (F-9).

Confirming DNA signatures from another representative down a different line of descent to those already mentioned above would be fantastic. Please use the contact links at the bottom of most of the pages linked above to discuss this further if interested in doing your bit for the overall knowledge of how the FAIRBAIRNs connect.

Keep an eye on ...

... both of the recent changes indexes (analysis section, and lineages section) in case this diary isn't updated with what changed as the tidy up/rationalisation between the DNA pages, and the One Names Study analysis and lineages sections continues apace, and must surely nearly be finished!

The family of Robert & Jane (URQUHART) FAIRBAIRN of Glasgow then Pawtucket are newly included (18th), as is the family of Thomas & Elspeth (WOOD) FAIRBAIRN, but that listed on the 17th,  Robert (married Elizabeth CROSBIE) is only in the changes index because of a few typos being corrected.
For the 16th, (F-35) and his matching family, that of Francis & Agnes (DICKIESON) FAIRBAIRN shown on the 13th are brought over from the DNA project.

Bookmarks in the Analsyis Section:
If you have any real FAIRBAIRN people, as opposed to place page "people" eg FAIRBAIRN(SCT), bookmarked from the Analysis section of the One Name Study pages you will need to find them in the Lineages Section and re-bookmark them as they are transferred to where their lineages can be more easily attached and updated. (so the analysis section recent changes index is currently shrinking).

The Descendant charts section is being changed regularly at the moment as an appropriate structure is experimented with, along with how much to show on the first page to more readily identify lineages likely to be of interest.

Remember that there are DNA testing discounts going until the end of December, and it would be great to get a few more lines represented.
How about someone from the family of Thomas & Elspeth (WOOD) FAIRBAIRN? Or the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRNs?

Variety is the spice of life

Variety being the spice of life, and given that all our dna results should be supplemented by paper trails, I've updated the Summary WFN Patriarchs page with another version of the family of John and Helen (Anderson); John and Jessie (Johnston) ; Patrick and Margaret (Purves) etc that you may find interesting (and would love to re-find the original I spotted on the web some time ago to be able to check the sources).

The researcher list has grown by two:
  • John has agreed to be shown as the researcher/line-leader for the family of William and Margaret (Scott) FAIRBAIRN, the schoolmaster of Bowden and Galashiels (but only because I promised him he wouldn't be flooded with enquiries, only useful information on where to find descendants willing to join the project to represent his line )
  • Bea is researching the St Andrews Fairbairns from Fife
Also included is a stub for a new pedigree being worked on for inclusion:

Cove, Cockburnspath, Eyemouth family link

Updated the  Fairbairn Web Page links to include some very informative pages on the Fairbairn families of Cove, Cockburnspath, Eyemouth, namely those of John & Grizel (JOHNSTONE) FAIRBAIRN etc.

Any FAIRBAIRN males of this line out there to represent this family? Admittedly a large number of them were caught up in a number of tragic fishing fleet disasters, but there must be some modern day ones left.
