With one of the recent BigY sales at FamilyTreeDNA, the opportunity was taken to test four of the Lineage 1e FAIRBAIRNs, and analyse their results at yFull.com.
The latest version (5.04) of the yFull tree now shows that this has resulted in the creation of a new branch of the tree underneath I-Y7277 (which was estimated by yFull as having been formed 3400 ybp TMRCA 3100 ybp) which is where they are currently shown on FTDNA.
The new branch is I-Y32666, with an estimated formation date of 3100 ybp but a TMRCA (time to most recent common ancestor) of 225 ybp, ie 1725.
The DNASurnames Haplogroup tree which shows yDNA tree branches, along with line patriarchs and tested participants (if approved to do so, has been updated (http://dnasurnames.info/dchaplogroupi.htm#a20)
We believe, from papertrails, ySTR testing and a bit of "a miracle happens here" for one or two of the links, that all four tested descend from John FAIRBAIRN and Bessie FLINT whose children were baptized at Melrose, Roxburghshire from 1729 to 1740, and one at Smailholm in 1741.
So how much earlier were all the branches for the matching I1 Fairbairns formed?
That will take an interested party, or two, from any of other groups at
to also test BigY and analyse the results at yFull.
Any takers?
For all interested in the FAIRBAIRN (and variants) surname - this blog is the project diary for both the One Name Study and the DNA Project.

Fairbairn atDNA comparisons
The Fairbairn atDNA page has been updated to include more analysis of how much detectable dna has survived between assorted lines.
At this stage it only includes descendants of John & Bessie (FLINT) FAIRBAIRN, but other lines can be included.
Perhaps you've hit some particularly interesting comparisons across lines only known to be distantly yDNA connected via the FAIRBAIRN line?
As it says on the page, all it takes for that to happen is to let me know the GEDMatch ids of the kits concerned.
Or better still:
- run the (free) Multiple Kit Analysis and the 3D chromosome browser tools GEDMatch provides for the kit numbers concerned,
- save each result as a complete web page and
- send me either a link to the pages on eg Dropbox, or the zipped up pages.
You may care to also provide your own labels for the kits listed, rather than use the kit names.
The grid of total shared cMs below is now attached to John FAIRBAIRN's page on WikiTree as well.
Triangulations of the segments involved is not yet complete to check, if possible, that they are indeed Fairbairn/Flint DNA.

Coldstream FAIRBAIRNs
The One Name Study lineage pages have been refreshed.
Many of the so-called "changes" shown in the latest change indexes are probably cosmetic rather than earth shattering discoveries and many trees will have new twigs.
One update that may lead somewhere is that for John (marr. Jane WADDELL) FAIRBAIRN of Coldstream.
David shared a cemetery transcription, which tied together with a Coldstream burial record in the OPR (albeit with a conflicting year) may mean that we have a more accurate birth year for John.
We are still looking for an interested direct male line FAIRBAIRN descendent to represent this line in the DNA project with at least a Y-DNA37, but preferably Y-DNA67, to see what that will tell us.
FamilyFinder autosomal dna testing from descendants of the potentially related lines may well show up as a match to the one FamilyFinder result we have already.

The SMITH Connection
A snippet there, a snippet here. So are trees pieced together.
the importance of examining originals, not just indexes was reinforced this week when Rosemary provided the snippet from the marriage of George Henry FAIRBAIRN and Jane SMITH - they were 2nd cousins, Jane's mother being an Ellen FAIRBAIRN.
Ellen turns out to be the daughter of Andrew FAIRBAIRN and Margaret HENDERSON.
This is yet another piece of corroboration that George Henry's father John was indeed the son of William FAIRBAIRN, schoolmaster of Bowden then Galashiels.
The One Name Study pages have been updated to include the key participants in the FAIRBAIRN and SMITH relationships teazed out from the above.

Gardening connection
Richard has unearthed a reference in the will of John the bookseller in Edinburgh, one of his/the Penicuik FAIRBAIRNs, to John "the Gardener in Chelsea" to whose children he left £500.
Tentative id of John is that he might just be John Snr's step- nephew.
With a tail wind and a bit more luck and perseverance just maybe the Clapham nurserymen will also "fit" in here somewhere?
Of the three families only the Clapham line are currently represented in the DNA project so if anyone can claim descent from the Penicuik line, or the Chelsea gardener (whose children are currently unidentified), we would love to hear from you.

New Canadian twigs
The trees of
Mary and her family (Mary, John Richardson, Hilda Lauriss) were heading for Edmonton, Alberta
Adam & Catherine (WILKINSON) FAIRBAIRN were heading for Toronto.
There was also a 22 yr old joiner Robert on board, of an age to be Adam's brother, but going to Edmonton, which Robert in that family is slightly older.
Neither tree has any representatives in the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project, so any direct male line FAIRBAIRN from either, or any other unrepresented line for that matter, would be most welcome to help tease out who relates to whom.
- James & Margaret (SHAW) FAIRBAIRN of Currie, Midlothian

Two matches
The previously referred to DNA match between the tree of William FAIRBAIRN, schoolmaster of Galashiels, represented in the DNA project by Michael (F-23), and that of John FAIRBARNES of Winlaton/Swalwell, Durham, represented by CJ (F-54) has been confirmed as an excellent match, 66 markers out of 67, so any shared ancestor should be well within genealogical timeframes.
Now to find the paper trail.
Jury still well out as to whether or not that means CJ's origins are Scottish, or those of John & Helen (ANDERSON) FAIRBAIRN, William's parents, were actually English!
The other match that is shaping up rather well is that of our representative for the Cockburnspath family of John & Helen (GRIEVE) FAIRBAIRN, who is an exact match, 47/47 so far, to the line of James & Helen (CAMPBELL) FAIRBAIRN, represented in the DNA project by David (F-9).
Confirming DNA signatures from another representative down a different line of descent to those already mentioned above would be fantastic. Please use the contact links at the bottom of most of the pages linked above to discuss this further if interested in doing your bit for the overall knowledge of how the FAIRBAIRNs connect.

Minnies galore
Looking up a few FAIRBAIRNs on the newly available British Columbia BDM images led to the update of several trees, what with one thing leading to another, and another....
The main ones of note include a few more twigs on the trees of:
In addition, John & Margaret (CROMBY) FAIRBAIRN of Swalwell, Durham have now been included in the lineages section, previously only on the Patriarchs page, which has also had several more branches of assorted trees updated
The main ones of note include a few more twigs on the trees of:
- John & Bessie (fflint) FAIRBAIRN - particularly the branch of Robert FAIRBAIRN and Kate SCOTT, noting en route that at least one online tree has Minnie ANDERSON as marrying both William Merdic son of William & Katherine (MORGAN) FAIRBAIRN and John son of Elliot & Mary (HOBKIRK) FAIRBAIRN. The latter is a Minnie DROVER.
- As a result, a new lineage was added, that of Robert & Margaret (ELLIOT) FAIRBAIRN, grandparents of the above Elliot.
- John & Elizabeth (YULE) FAIRBAIRN - particularly the line Thomas & Catherine (ANGUS) FAIRBAIRN's son Thomas

Hidden updates
Updates to existing descendent charts wont necessarily show up in the recent change index.
Recent changes there:
- the inclusion of another New Zealand branch for the family of Thomas and Elizabeth (SIMPSON) FAIRBAIRN
- a few more Australian twigs on the John & Elizabeth (YULE) FAIRBAIRN
The Fife lineage of Thomas and Ann (SMITH) FAIRBAIRN has been included with grandson John's page explaining why it looks like his death cert is inaccurate. Anyone know of any connection to Thomas and Elizabeth (SIMPSON) FAIRBAIRN above? Both are from Fife.

The Robinson connection?
Two more, potentially related, lineages have been added to the One Name Study lineages section:
By dates, it is unlikely they are father (John) and son (Robert), but both seem to like Robinson as a first name.
What is the connection between them and where in Scotland did they both come from?
Rachel was in Jedburgh in 1841 and daughter Margaret moved to Newcastle.
Son Robinson moved to Australia.
Robert & Mary lived in Newcastle but Robert was born in Scotland.
Son James appears to have moved to Pembrokeshire.
Any direct male line FAIRBAIRN descendants around willing to take the plunge and join the DNA project to test where the lines may "fit" and whether or not they are related to each other?

Houghton le Spring
Most of the One Name Study recent changes index around today relate to the FAIRBAIRNS of Houghton le Spring.
It had been suggested that the 1879 London death of a Robert FAIRBAIRNS might be the long searched for death of Robert FAIRBAIRN, Civil Engineer, married to Elizabeth YOUNG.
This does not appear to be the case, so we are still looking for the fate of the latter beyond 1854 (along with that of sons John and James beyond about 1861).

Stamfordham, Northumberland (NBL)
A stub from the Summary Patriarchs page for the family of Robert & Mary (ATKINSON) FAIRBAIRN of Stamfordham that has existed for quite some time without further information has been updated and linked to their tree now included in the One Name Study pages.
This tree includes two branches linked on circumstantial evidence:
- Son Robert (married to Ann DODD), linked by birth date and place and a missing first son, elder brother of Stephen to be found
- Grandson John of Erie, Pennsylvania, (married to Elizabeth HUBBARD) assumed son of Stephen & Jane (JACKSON) FAIRBAIRN
Investigations for other Stamfordham FAIRBAIRNs led to a couple more inventive indexing candidates: William and John sons of a John, near contemporary to the above Robert, were indexed as FARIBEWER and FAIRBWIER respectively, even though their clearly enumerated relationship to John (born abt 1778 at Stamfordham and indexed as FAIRBAIRN, living at Horsley Barns) was son in both instances.

The NZ connection?
This FAIRBAIRN Rootsweb Message board post refers.
Interested to hear from anyone with any light to shed on the topic of whether or not John the son of Henry and Mary (YOUNG) FAIRBAIRN is the John who married Annie MIDDLEWOOD in Chorlton cum Hardy, Lancashire, and if so, why family (Eric MEKIE writing in 1977), thought John had gone "to NZ".
As John has not yet been definitively found in the 1881 census, perhaps he went and returned?
Regardless of the answer to the above question, the One Name Study pages have been updated to include Henry in his family tree, the line of John & Elizabeth (YULE) FAIRBAIRN and a page included for John.

Tweaks finished? Two new lineages added
The One Name Study Lineage pages have been fully reloaded.
They should now include all the person information (as opposed to place) that was once on the Analysis section, and all of the Researcher, Lineage, and Wanted! information that was in the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project supplementary pages.
The recent changes index is therefore a little fuller than normal, with many of the entries merely being there because of the above shift having been completed.
There are some textual alterations as the rationale behind some of the linkages has been reviewed and an attempt made to make some of the conclusions a bit clearer - no doubt more to come.
New to the pages are the trees of :
Wish we could find one for the South African family of John son of James and Agnes (BRACK) FAIRBAIRN.

Tweaks
Summary DNA result page has been republished to catch up with the more detailed DNA results which confirmed a dna signature for the line of John A FAIRBAIRN & Sarah DAUGHTERTY (see David F-46's DNA page)
The Patriarchs page likewise has had a few links changed to reflect the shift of lineage data from the DNA pages to the One Name Study (ONS) pages, and a few Edinburgh twigs included for the line of John & Alison (MOFFAT) FAIRBAIRN, which twigs are also included in their ONS lineage 1b4b descendant chart, that of Robert & Elizabeth (CROSBIE) FAIRBAIRN. John & Alison's son John was found working as a mason in Edinburgh (born Smailholm).

Military FAIRBAIRNs
The move of Descendant and Wanted! charts, together with the Researcher lists, from the DNA study pages to the One Name Study continues, and as before, whilst it does so, many links may well be broken, but hopefully fewer as time progresses.
This shift also means some of the missing trees for dna participants are now included.
Keep an eye on the Recent Changes index.
Most recent entries are because of the above shift apart from John. Having stumbled across him in Somerset he got placed into what is believed to be his Borders family, that of John son of John & Julian (BOAK) FAIRBAIRN, so their descendant chart has been updated.
What the recent change index doesn't yet show are the charts for two families with extended military service currently being researched for inclusion, and hopefully finding a direct male line FAIRBAIRN at the end of them to join the DNA project to (dis)prove suggested connections (to either Robert and Elizabeth (CROSBIE) FAIRBAIRN, and/or Ralph and Helen (CROW) FAIRBAIRN.
It's discount time at FamilyTree DNA, so a great time to join and see which family you match - order a test here and join the project to help us unravel the FAIRBAIRNs.
John & Jane (WADDELL) FAIRBAIRN of Smailholm then Coldstream, and the John who may, or may not, be their son, married to Helen ROSS at Coldstream.

Busy few weeks
Andrew (F-47)'s results have started arriving, resulting in several updates to the FAIRBAIRN related pages. We have a match with the "orphaned" Michael Rowland (F-23) FAIRBAIRN at last (in Haplogroup R1b1).
So somewhere, somehow, David (marr. to Peggy MERCER) FAIRBAIRN is related to John and Helen (ANDERSON) FAIRBAIRN.
Don't be surprised if there are broken links, or charts have disappeared. The results arrive in the middle of the, slow, rationalisation of the DNA and One Name Study pages so that lineage, wanted and researcher information is on the One Name Study pages, leaving DNA results and signature charts for the DNA pages.
If you have any particular people bookmarked, they are likely to change numbers sorry, to match those in the master database, which will make it easier to link from one site to the other.
The recent changes index on the DNA pages has been inflated somewhat by the realisation that somewhere along the way haplogroup numbering has changed, all those assigned to R1b1b2 now appearing as R1b1a2 instead on the Family Tree DNA results. Not all have been changed as yet.
Two other kits (F-46) and (F-48) are at the lab awaiting results, but not scheduled to produce any until December - placeholders exist on the Summary DNA results page.

20th: Frank & Anna/Annie of Pennsylvania
A post on the Rootsweb Fairbairn Surname Message Board led to a couple of families being included on the Patriarchs page of the DNA project.
Both have a Frank and Anna/Annie of Pennsylvania in them.
One looks like it leads back to a John born either 1794 Ireland (his own census data), or 1784(his headstone, or a transcription of it), or in Scotland (children's census data).
By 1826 at least, he was in Pennsylvania and married to Jane Eliza HOWE.
The other Frank and Anna/Annie of Pennsylvania belongs to John and Elizabeth (HUBBARD) FAIRBAIRN where John was born Newcastle, England around 1826.
