DNA Sales

Check out the overall DNASurnames blog for full details of the FamilyTreeDNA sale prices for DNA Day, and a link to sales at other sites.

Of particular interest for the Fairbairn Surname DNA project are those for
FamilyFinder - $20 off to $59 US
BigY down to $425US
SNP Packs down to $89
yDNA 37 to $129
yDNA 67 to $209

Please check with your project admin before rushing off into SNP Pack testing to ensure that you are purchasing a relevant pack for your haplogroup.
And if you are going to test BigY at some stage, save your pennies rather than duplicate your testing by also doing a SNP pack.

FYI we now have 4 BigY test results in the FAIRBAIRN project, all currently determined to be I-Y7277, and awaiting further analysis at YFull.com to see if there's any new sub branches to be found.
It would be good to see how the ELLIOT sub group in the project compare!

2015 - sale - FFinder "find"

If you want a great kickstart to the year, I have some remaining coupon codes for further $$ off the current sale prices for anyone interested.
The coupons range from $5 or $10 off any test (which could be used to transfer ancestry tests to FTDNA and unlock all your matches) through $5 or $10 off FamilyFinder , Y-DNA 37/67/111, mtDNAFull Sequence to  $100 off BigY.
Sale and coupons expire midnight 31st December Houston time.

It would be a great time for anyone with FAIRBAIRN ancestry to consider FamilyFinder tests, a very useful tool in our genealogy toolkit.
The more tests we have, the more data, and the easier it gets to divide your matches into specific lines and pinpoint the common ancestors.

FamilyFinder has turned up trumps for me and looks to have given us hope to finally prove a theory about the family of Archibald & Alison (CROSSER) FAIRBAIRN, namely that the Robert FAIRBAIRN living in Canada by about 1827/8 and living in Richmond, Ontario 1850s is indeed their son.
We never have managed to find/convince a direct male line FAIRBAIRN to test Y-DNA to prove this, but live in hope.
But we do now have a triangulated match on chromosome 5 between myself (Lorna), GD (F-29) a descendant of David son of Archibald and Alison, and a descendant of Robert's granddaughter Mary Catherine KELLAR nee FAIRBAIRN via his son William.

Looking good to start the new year.

As 2014 draws to a close, I wish you all a great 2015, with many thanks to all of our FAIRBAIRN project participants who have helped with some fascinating discoveries since the project began.

The original question that led to the creation of the project was helped immensely with our very first kit and match - the ancestry of Archibald FAIRBAIRN (married Alison CROSSER).

My second question, also specific to my family, was to prove John FAIRBAIRN in New York by 1840, father known to be a Walter, was the son of my Walter.
That took some time to prove, but was eventually proven both by Y-DNA matches and shortly thereafter with a missing piece of the papertrail.

The more generic question was the inter-relatedness of the Scottish Borders FAIRBAIRNs in particular, but FAIRBAIRNs in general.
That has led to some surprises, thanks to all of those contributing their Y-DNA.
Several paper trails turned out to need revision, but in the main, the bulk of those tested, do indeed relate to each other, belonging to haplogroup I1, with the earliest tree, and modal value for that haplogroup being the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRN ancestral lines.

Perhaps in 2015 we could add a few more lines from further afield into the project - Yorkshire FAIRBURN in particular.

Check out the sale prices

Becoming curious about your origins?
Check out the FamilyTreeDNA Discounts going until 31st December.

Before jumping in and ordering a Y-DNA test, do however check to see whether or not your FAIRBAIRN line is already represented by a direct line male as there is little point in close relatives (say 1st to 3rd) both testing y_DNA.
Distant cousins, yes as that adds confirmation to the derived dna "signature" for the patriarch of the line.

However, ALL people are encouraged to test FamilyFinder to add to their and our knowledge of their overall genetic makeup.

I have several coupon codes available for further discounts off the sale prices should anyone be interested.

Direct male line FAIRBAIRNs from the families listed on our Wanted! page are particularly welcome.

Continuing to explore the Y-SNP tree of mankind

With the current DNA Day/Arbor day sale at FamilyTree DNA we are taking the opportunity to try and find the next step down towards the present on the I1 haplogroup tree.

You may recall that our selected representative, John F-17, had advanced the matching group of FAIRBAIRNs down the I1 tree to Z141+ (was then I1a2a1a but appears now to be I1d...) but was negative for Z2535, one of the next branches on the tree.
We've selected F2642 as the next to test for.

The sale is also 20% off on Y-DNA37 tests, so any direct male line FAIRBAIRN would be most welcome to join the project to see which family they most closely relate too, or provide a new slant on a new group.
Any Yorkshire FAIRBURNs out there?

Check out the Wanted! page for lineages we particularly would like to hear from.

Remember that although Y-DNA testing is the most effective way to confirm that line A matches line B, those of us that aren't direct male line FAIRBAIRNs can still contribute to this giant genetic jigsaw by using autosomal testing - FamilyFinder with FamilyTreeDNA or the Ancestry DNA test (and later transferring results to FamilyTree DNA to get the best of both worlds).

Short DNA sale

Family Tree DNA have advised that they are having a "DNA day" sale which originally finished 11:59pm 22 April 2013 CDT.
It has been extended to the 25th April, with the following explanation:
----
This year we began our commemoration of National DNA Day on April 19th. This coincides with the celebration by the National Human Genome Research Institute and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History's partnership to celebrate the 1953 discovery of the double helix and the 2003 completion of the Human Genome Project, which was April 19th.

However, DNA Day is celebrated worldwide on April 25th. Therefore, we've extended our sale! The usual conditions apply - orders must be made and paid for by 11:59 p.m. CDT on Thursday, April 25th.
----
Great time to be in.
Here's the original notification, with the prices:

Excellent Family Finder & mtDNA full sequence pricing, and news of Y-DNA upgrades being available on Father's Day
So if you've been thinking about doing your bit for our overall knowledge of FAIRBAIRNs, go to Family Tree DNA, select the FAIRBAIRN project and order your appropriate test.
If in doubt about what is best, select a link in the footer of any of the FAIRBAIRN pages linked at top right and ask.
If already tested, log in to your personal page at Family Tree DNA and select an upgrade. The tests relevant to you will pop up.

From their advice to administrators:

"While the special pricing features all the major tests, we’re placing particular emphasis on the Full Mitochondrial Sequence and Family Finder. We’ll offer Y-DNA upgrades during a Father’s Day sale and will give you those details at that time.
By carefully choosing the sale options and limiting the length of the sale, we will be better able to focus our resources on processing the tests efficiently and avoiding delays in delivering results.
We are proud to announce we have successfully moved our mtDNA Full Sequencing line from Sanger DNA sequencing to what is called Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). This gives us much greater capacity to process tests, to reduce costs without sacrificing quality, and to ensure shorter turnaround times.
We must run the entire sequence every time we process an mtDNA full sequence test, even for upgrades. However, in recognition of your prior investment- and National DNA Day – we’re offering our lowest price ever for the FMS and upgrades.
Rather than the 8-10 weeks first generation sequencing required, we expect results to be completed within 5-6 weeks. This does depend on the number of orders received though. If their DNA is already at our lab, those who order first may expect even shorter turnaround times.

For a limited time we will be selling the FMS for $189 and whether you’ve tested HVR1 or HVR1+2, you’ll be able to upgrade to the Full Sequence for just $129!
In addition, we are also lowering the Family Finder to $169 for this sale!
Here is the list of all tests under the promotion:
Full MtDNA Sequence…. $189
Upgrades to FMS….$129
Y-DNA37 (new and add-on)…. $119
Y-DNA67 (new and add-on)…. $199
Y-DNA37 + Full MtDNA Sequence…. $308
Y-DNA12 + FF…. $218
Y-DNA37 + FF…. $288
Y-DNA67 + FF…. $368
Family Finder.... $169
Family Finder + Full MtDNA Sequence…. $358
SuperDNA….$388 (Y-67 + FMS)
Comprehensive DNA…. $557 (Y-67 + FMS + FF

The sale will begin tonight, April 18th, at 6PM CDT and will conclude at 11:59PM CDT on Monday April 22nd. All orders must be placed and paid for by the end of the sale to receive the promotional price.
There will be no need for a coupon - all prices will be automatically adjusted on the website."

Entry level Y-DNA discount

Family Tree DNA have announced a heavy promotional discount for their Y-DNA12 test.

This is an excellent price for this entry level test to begin exploring your connections to other FAIRBAIRNs.

Be in and begin an exciting journey.

The link is only relevant for direct male line FAIRBAIRNs as it joins the kit to the FAIRBAIRN project, others reading this who aren't FAIRBAIRNs, are recommended to navigate back to the front page and follow the links to the promo.

This appears to be extended to the 7th March - still time.

DNA Discout time

A great time to explore relationships between FAIRBAIRN (and surname variant) families.
FamilytreeDNA have announced their annual sale:

We would  love to hear from any direct male line FAIRBAIRN wishing to explore his family history and do his bit for our understanding of the connections between the various lines.

We would particularly love to hear from him if he belongs to any of the families listed in the  One Name Study Wanted! page, or any FAIRBAIRNs, or similar, not listed anywhere as yet.
(Further information available on the  DNA project Patriarchs page and on the One Name Study)

As interesting things happen in the markers 38 to 67, we prefer Y-DNA67 tests, but for initial exploration of matches, Y-DNA37 is a good starting point.

A subsidy may be available for some lines, e.g.  these as yet unrepresented lines: Thomas & Elspeth/Eppie (WOOD) FAIRBAIRN,  George & Jane (LAW) FAIRBAIRN, James & Mabel (THOMSON) FAIRBAIRN.

Contact details to explore this option, or for any further information,  available in the footer of most project pages.

Wanted!

Family Tree DNA have announced a short (ends midnight Sunday 15h July, Houston time) summer sale.
A good time to be in for those lines as not yet represented in the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project.

How about a descendant of Thomas & Elspeth/Eppie (WOOD) FAIRBAIRN, or George and Margaret (LOUGH) FAIRBAIRN?
What about the Northumberland family of Robert & Mary (ATKINSON) FAIRBAIRN of Stamfordham ?
Or any of those shown, or indexed, on the Wanted! pages?

As you can see from our growing number of results to date (over 50 kits now), a large number of the Scottish Borders families are indeed related, with enough results now to show which families are more closely related to whom.
So where does YOUR line "fit"? Are the English ones related? (Yes for at least some lines, as the Clapham gardeners proved to be so.)

For this project, you need to be a direct male line FAIRBAIRN, and although Y-DNA67 is the preferred test, a Y-DNA37 will give some indication of your "place" in the jigsaw. Upgrades are always possible at a later date.

Click here to select your test and join the project, or use the contact details at the bottom of most of the pages linked above for further information, including whether or not a subsidy may be available for a particularly Wanted! family.

Anonymity can be assured if necessary. All those named in the project have agreed to be so shown.

2 day dna discount sale

If any of you are at all  interested in exploring which group of FAIRBAIRNs you most closely relate to, you may be interested to see that Family Tree DNA, the company we use for the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project, is having a 2day sale (finishes midnight Sat Apr 21st (?Houston time?).

If you do decide to join, and a sale is an excellent time to do so, make sure that you follow the order link from the project to automatically be enrolled in the FAIRBAIRN proejct.
Privacy can be guaranteed, all those named on the project pages have agreed to be so shown.
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Fairburn
is the order link, but make sure you are getting the prices shown below

Check out the One Name Study Wanted! pages
http://fairbairn.lornahen.com/cpwantedfairbairns.htm
for those lines particularly wanted to see who fits where, and the summary DNA project pages to see if your line is already represented
http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/results
Joining the project already makes you eligible for a project discount, but the prices have been discounted further:
To be of relevance for the FAIRBAIRN project the person testing has to be a direct male line FAIRBAIRN, sorry about the discrimination, but anyone descended via the female line doesn't have the Y-dna passed down the chain from father to son.
          Current Group price/SALE PRICE
Y-DNA 37     $149 /    $129
or
Y-DNA 67     $238 /    $199
are of most interest to the project but the following may be of personal interest.

Family Finder     $289 /    $199
FF+ Y-DNA 37     $438 /    $328
FF + mtDNAPlus     $438 /    $328
Comprehensive (FF + FMS + Y-DNA 67)     $797 /    $657

Upgrades
Y-DNA 12-37 Marker     $99/  $69
Y-DNA 37-67 Marker     $99/     $79
Y-DNA 12-67 Marker     $199/     $148
Family Finder add-on     $289 /    $199

Any questions, just ask, this is a very good opportunity to expand our knowledge of how the FAIRBAIRN families may, or may not relate.
Regards
Lorna Henderson

Keep an eye on ...

... both of the recent changes indexes (analysis section, and lineages section) in case this diary isn't updated with what changed as the tidy up/rationalisation between the DNA pages, and the One Names Study analysis and lineages sections continues apace, and must surely nearly be finished!

The family of Robert & Jane (URQUHART) FAIRBAIRN of Glasgow then Pawtucket are newly included (18th), as is the family of Thomas & Elspeth (WOOD) FAIRBAIRN, but that listed on the 17th,  Robert (married Elizabeth CROSBIE) is only in the changes index because of a few typos being corrected.
For the 16th, (F-35) and his matching family, that of Francis & Agnes (DICKIESON) FAIRBAIRN shown on the 13th are brought over from the DNA project.

Bookmarks in the Analsyis Section:
If you have any real FAIRBAIRN people, as opposed to place page "people" eg FAIRBAIRN(SCT), bookmarked from the Analysis section of the One Name Study pages you will need to find them in the Lineages Section and re-bookmark them as they are transferred to where their lineages can be more easily attached and updated. (so the analysis section recent changes index is currently shrinking).

The Descendant charts section is being changed regularly at the moment as an appropriate structure is experimented with, along with how much to show on the first page to more readily identify lineages likely to be of interest.

Remember that there are DNA testing discounts going until the end of December, and it would be great to get a few more lines represented.
How about someone from the family of Thomas & Elspeth (WOOD) FAIRBAIRN? Or the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRNs?
