A snippet there, a snippet here. So are trees pieced together.
the importance of examining originals, not just indexes was reinforced this week when Rosemary provided the snippet from the marriage of George Henry FAIRBAIRN and Jane SMITH - they were 2nd cousins, Jane's mother being an Ellen FAIRBAIRN.
Ellen turns out to be the daughter of Andrew FAIRBAIRN and Margaret HENDERSON.
This is yet another piece of corroboration that George Henry's father John was indeed the son of William FAIRBAIRN, schoolmaster of Bowden then Galashiels.
The One Name Study pages have been updated to include the key participants in the FAIRBAIRN and SMITH relationships teazed out from the above.
For all interested in the FAIRBAIRN (and variants) surname - this blog is the project diary for both the One Name Study and the DNA Project.

One Name Study pages have been updated to merge the family of George FAIRBAIRN and Janet ROBERTSON/Mary HARDIE of Camelon Park, Stirling, with George the son of William & Margaret (SCOTT) FAIRBAIRN, William being the schoolmaster of Bowden then Galashiels (and uncle of Sir William).

DNA Discout time
A great time to explore relationships between FAIRBAIRN (and surname variant) families.
FamilytreeDNA have announced their annual sale:
We would love to hear from any direct male line FAIRBAIRN wishing to explore his family history and do his bit for our understanding of the connections between the various lines.
We would particularly love to hear from him if he belongs to any of the families listed in the One Name Study Wanted! page, or any FAIRBAIRNs, or similar, not listed anywhere as yet.
(Further information available on the DNA project Patriarchs page and on the One Name Study)
As interesting things happen in the markers 38 to 67, we prefer Y-DNA67 tests, but for initial exploration of matches, Y-DNA37 is a good starting point.
A subsidy may be available for some lines, e.g. these as yet unrepresented lines: Thomas & Elspeth/Eppie (WOOD) FAIRBAIRN, George & Jane (LAW) FAIRBAIRN, James & Mabel (THOMSON) FAIRBAIRN.
Contact details to explore this option, or for any further information, available in the footer of most project pages.
Order any of the new kits and join the FAIRBAIRN project by clicking here
If aleady a participant, log in and order any of the upgrades shown below.

Wanted!
Family Tree DNA have announced a short (ends midnight Sunday 15h July, Houston time) summer sale.
A good time to be in for those lines as not yet represented in the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project.
How about a descendant of Thomas & Elspeth/Eppie (WOOD) FAIRBAIRN, or George and Margaret (LOUGH) FAIRBAIRN?
What about the Northumberland family of Robert & Mary (ATKINSON) FAIRBAIRN of Stamfordham ?
Or any of those shown, or indexed, on the Wanted! pages?
As you can see from our growing number of results to date (over 50 kits now), a large number of the Scottish Borders families are indeed related, with enough results now to show which families are more closely related to whom.
So where does YOUR line "fit"? Are the English ones related? (Yes for at least some lines, as the Clapham gardeners proved to be so.)
For this project, you need to be a direct male line FAIRBAIRN, and although Y-DNA67 is the preferred test, a Y-DNA37 will give some indication of your "place" in the jigsaw. Upgrades are always possible at a later date.
Click here to select your test and join the project, or use the contact details at the bottom of most of the pages linked above for further information, including whether or not a subsidy may be available for a particularly Wanted! family.
Anonymity can be assured if necessary. All those named in the project have agreed to be so shown.

Cornish lithographer(s)
Investigations as to where George Reginald Pellew FAIRBAIRN belonged led to an updated descendency chart for the family of James the engraver as George is his grandson - by a previously unknown to exist daughter-in-law, Lucy PELLEW.
This identification does assume that there is only one James FAIRBAIRN, lithographer, around Truro in the right time period, who died between 1881 and 1891.
There are only a grand total of 9 F*R*B*N* births registered in Cornwall between 1837 and 1915, 4 as FAIRBAIRN in Truro of dates to fit James and Harriet (BEDDARD), then James and Lucy, two of whom appear in baptisms indexed on FamilySearch.
The investigation also led to the inclusion of a Cornish page in the One Name Study analysis pages .

Cockburnspath
Most of the trees published here are those not well represented online, or included in the dna study, so up to now the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRNs have not been included.
However, given that it is a one name study, that there are a lot of descendants all over the world, and a lot of people are researching them, a brief tree of the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRNs has now been included - from George and Christian (BOOKLESS/BUICKLESS/BEUGLASS) FAIRBAIRN. As the disclaimer at the top of each chart says, the tree is by no means complete, merely containing those I've come across in my research and needed to "fit" someone into a tree, or eliminate as a duplicate of someone else etc.
This line still needs a direct male line FAIRBAIRN to represent it in the FAIRBAIRN DNA study.
Which of the other FAIRBAIRN lines do you think they'll most closely connect to?
If you are researching this line and wish to be shown as such on the researchers page, do use the contact email at the foot of each page and let me know.

Edinburgh or Dunbar?
The main changes, despite what the Recently changed index shows, are the transfer of James & Elizabeth (PURVES) FAIRBAIRN of Hallyburton from the Analysis section to the Lineage section of the site.
Two particular additions are the inclusion of the mysterious Robert FAIRBAIRN, engineer supposedly born Eckford, and the slater George FAIRBAIRN (married to Christian CLAPPERTON), of either Edinburgh or Dunbar.
Sanna's "update" is merely to link her to her family tree, and most of the other recent changes are cosmetic.

FAIRBAIRN/CLINKSCALE ++
The rest of the DNA results are in for the second representative for the family of William & Alison (CLINKSCALE) FAIRBAIRN of Bedshiel, Greenlaw - a 36/37 match between Godfrey(F-48) and Neil(F-4).
The rationalisation and linking between the DNA project and the One Name Study continues apace, so keep an eye on their respective recent changes indexes.
Given the DNA testing discounts available right now, if you belong to any of the families listed on the Wanted! page, and are a direct male line FAIRBAIRN, do please consider joining the project and helping towards the jigsaw. Would be an excellent time to get representatives for the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRNs, and what about the family of George and Jane (LAW) FAIRBAIRN (recently added to the pages given the two contemporary soldier Andrews have now been "sorted").

Another kit, patriarch updates
Kit F-47 has been ordered.
As a result, the summary Patriarchs page has been updated with Andrew's pedigree, (that of David & Peggy (MERCER) FAIRBAIRN of Melrose) and a placeholder on the results chart.
Also a couple of other pedigrees, both wanting representatives have now been added.
The trees are those of: George the nail manufacturer of Falkirk, Stirlingshire and a few more twigs on the tree of George & Jane (LAW) FAIRBAIRN of Nenthorn, down from the Free Kirk Minister Robert Trotter FAIRBAIRN.

2nd: Some pedigree additions
Patriarchs page of the FAIRBAIRN DNA Project has had a few tweaks/additions to a couple of pedigrees in the hope of gaining (adidtional) representatives for the particular lines involved, including:
- some of the Adams in the line of George & Jane (LAW) FAIRBAIRN
- Thomas & Mary Ann (PARRY) FAIRBAIRN

28th: One Name Pages revamp
The One Name Study pages have been fully replublished, but don't believe all you see in the "Recently Changed" index, most are cosmetic tidy-ups for the republish of the site.
What is new is the preliminary info on the FAIRBAIRNs in the 1841 Roxburghshire Census - looking rather like a comparison of apples and oranges between the three main sites.
That, and the inclusion of son George into the family of James the engraver, as mentioned the other day.
With the site revamp comes a new format for descendancy charts.
Check out the Identified Family Groups for these.
The charts are now more interactive, IF you have java enabled, with the ability to expand/collapse branches to better see an overall picture where people "fit".
And yes, another inventive indexing entry: Barbarin - small wonder there's such a discrepancy between the census sites in the numbers.

18th: The Engraver's brother
Patriarch page has had a few twigs added to the family of James the engraver.
Found his (previously unknown to me) brother George, married to a Martha BOBBIN, with family spreading around London, Fife, Australia.

25th: Twig added to George and Jane (LAW)
The Patriarchs page has been updated to include another twig on the line of George and Jane (LAW) FAIRBAIRN of Nenthorn ++.
That of a son Andrew - or at least I believe he was their son, despite his 1899 death cert. saying his father was an Andrew married to a Jane LAW.
Still looking for a representative for this George/Jane line.

Am I getting too much exercise jumping to conclusions?
The next set of results (37 markers) are in for (Eckford:F-27), a descendent of the Robert who married Elizabeth YOUNG, which places this line closest to that for James and Helen (GOODFELLOW) Fairbairn (sharing marker 570 = 18 with a small group of Lineage 1 "clump 2").
Assuming that the James married to Helen GOODFELLOW, is indeed the James, son of George and Janet (MURRAY) born Kelso 1788, he has a brother Robert. However that Robert is fully accounted for in census and death records, so cannot be this Robert.
Some trees believe the George who married Janet MURRAY is the son of the John who married Helen ANDERSON, which would make him brother to the schoolmaster William (married Margaret SCOTT).
Which is where I'm getting my exercise jumping to several possible conclusions.
William had a second string to his bow, as a surveyor.
This Robert of Eckford (married Elizabeth YOUNG) appears in records as an engineer/surveyor for the Duke of Hamilton.
William is not known to have had a son Robert however, and to the best of my current knowledge, nor do any of his brothers, but maybe this has just changed?
Both the supplementary pages, and the result summary pages have been updated, although for the former, the DNA Signature Chart for Lineage 1 "clump 2" has not been updated - waiting for the last panel of results for that.
The Family Tree DNA Time Predictor shows that (Eckford:F-27) and Doug (GOODFELLOW) F-6 have an 82.6% probability of a common ancestor by 8 generations, and by 12 generations it is 95% (using the setting of no known match within 3 generations).

Another pedigree : George & Jane (LAW)
The Patriarchs and Wanted! pages have been updated to include another outline pedigree for a line where a participant, or two, would be most welcome to aid in piecing together the jigsaw of Scottish Borders FAIRBAIRNs.
George and Jane (LAW) FAIRBAIRN married at Nenthorn (his parish), with Jane being of Melrose. Family spread to England, the States, Sth Africa and Australia.
Somewhere amongst all those countries there must be someone interested in showing where this line fits, and if so we'd love to hear from you.
Out next set of preliminary results (12 markers) aren't due until 13 Feb (batch 341).

More links, and comments, added
Over the last week or so I've seen at least three different versions of a Fairbairn tree as it relates to George Fairbairn and Janet Murray.
I have therefore added some comments to George's page in the Lineages section.
Comments welcome, particularly from anyone who can quote sources and shed light on George's ancestry!
Trotter Fairbairn has also had an alternate set of grandparents offered up as a suggestion, John Fairbairn and Jean Trotter, who seemed to cover most geographical bases in the area. Who says our ancestors never moved around much?
Patriarchs page tidied up to reflect lineages for current tests in progress, and to add a few more links for people with comments in the lineages section of DNA Surnames, and for researchers also listed on those pages.

11th kit, and assorted pedigree updates
Welcome to James, our 11th participant.
I've been fossicking around trying to see if I might manage to link up the 1a, 1b, 1c lineages.
Jury still out on that, but as a result I have included more information on likely progenitors for a couple of these lineages, and added comments about same to the relevant pages, in particular:
George and Janet (Murray) Fairbairn
James and Elspeth (Trotter) Fairbairn and possible son
Thomas (possibly marr. Isobel Smith)
(and as a result, my knowledge of some of the earlier Fairbairn families has grown considerably).
Also, as per my personal web pages, John A (marr. Sarah Daughterty and Charity Smithson) Fairbairn has now been officially placed as son of David & Jane (WILLIAMSON) - but the plea for representative of this line to join the dna project still stands as my identification goes against two of his official certificates, (marriage and death).

18th: New results, new match info lineage 1
37 marker results are now in for F-6 a descendant of James and Helen (GOODFELLOW) FAIRBAIRN, James probably being the son of George & Janet (MURRAY) FAIRBAIRN.
This has shown that the initial match (11/12) with the existing participants in Lineage 1 is still there, but is now a Genetic Distance of 2 with the representative of the family of Archibald & Alison (CROSSER) FAIRBAIRN and GD 3 with both of the others.
I presume the difference in these Genetic Distance numbers is because Doug is 34/37 with Earl and Roy, and to my untrained eye, looks the same to Martin, BUT one of the mismatches with Martin is on CDY a, a faster mutating marker, so possibly if both have mutated compared to the others, that's one less mark against in the Genetic Distance stakes?
Some web updates to the WorldFamilies.net pages:
- Patriarchs page has had some small edits to the pedigree of William & Margaret (SCOTT) FAIRBAIRN pedigree to add a wife and occupation to son John as I'm now in touch with a descendant, and between us we may find an eligible participant).
- results page updated to reflect the 37 markers referred to above
- discussion pages updated slightly to acknowledge the two new matches on Lineage 1
