Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor (TMRCA)

The FAIRBAIRN DNA pages have been updated to include more data on the more recent participants, primarily to include missing links to their family trees, and Genetic Distance to their matches, along with a revamp to a few of the dna signature charts.
This latter are where we attempt to combine paper trails and dna information to surmise where/how connected families MAY actually link up. Completely subjective!

The most overdue update (Lineage 1, haplogroup I1 only) however was to include new Genetic Distance and TMRCA tables according to complete theory, compared to the above, "by eye" and judgement.
The program used for those is that found from the ISOGG  pages - Dean McGEE's Y-DNA Comparison Utility  updated for 111 marker comparisons.
These can be found on the Summary Discussion pages.
The preliminary Jul 2009 tables have been left there to show us how far we've come - we even now feature in the list of those with 50 or more participants on the World Families Network pages (where the summary dna pages are hosted).

Several more broken links have been attended to over assorted connected pages (Summary pedigrees aka Patriarchs page, summary results, supplementary dna information, this blog). Would be good to think that the background rationalisation that has been going on for some months now is near completion, but somehow there's always "just one more thing" to attend to.

DNA Update

The Supplementary DNA pages have been updated to include the newly received, complete t Y-DNA67, results from F-49, who is showing a good match to the Earlston/Mellerstain FAIRBAIRNs.
Several broken links on the analysis and signature chart pages have been corrected, and an additional signature chart, theoretical, included to show how some of our exact matches may connect.

We seem to also have found another ELLIOTT match, or rather one has found the FAIRBAIRNs, but at only 12 markers tested, it is too early to say how close the match is. Known info indicates an Irish ELLIOTT lineage.

28th: DNA pages updated

Several updates have been made to the DNA pages to incorporate the latest results, alter some of the older analyses and comments in light of more recent information, and, in the case of the dna signature charts, to remove any "corrections" previously given to some of the patriarchs where descendants were unique over Lineage 1 in having a particular value.
With more in the project now, these corrections are no longer necessary, and the method of maximum parsimony can be left to do its fully theoretical thing with our results.

In addition the recent changes index being used behind the scenes for checking has now been included as a public link - primarily because I keep forgetting to add comments here on what may have changed.

What has NOT yet happened is the inclusion of Robert(F-34)'s line in the Lineage 1 clump 2 dna signature chart.

The family, as opposed to dna, information is gradually being shifted to the One Name Study pages, with links generally inserted between the two on the appropriate people, eg John married to Agnes GIBSON.

27th: The ELLIOTTs and FAIRBAIRNs

The theoretical dna signature chart exploring the ELLIOTT/FAIRBAIRN conundrum on the supplementary pages has been updated, conservatively, after more time spent checking the matches against the Family Tree DNA Time Predictor.

Lineage 1 "clump 2" Subgroup grows

Another panel of results in for NJ (F-30), believed to be a descendant of the Clapham Nurserymen FAIRBAIRNs.
It places him firmly in the Lineage 1 who have 413a=25 and 446=14.
Given the other matches, I'm assuming that his CDYb=37 is an independent mutation from the others sharing this value, and he alone of all Lineage 1, has 442=11, so another assumption is that this signifies his particular line.
Another representative however could confirm this.
As it is rare for the panel of results yet to be received to be significant, NJ(F=30)'s line has now been added to the Theoretical DNA Signature chart for Lineage 1, with some corresponding tweaks to the pages for George and James FAIRBAIRN, whom I am assigning, for now, as siblings.

1660s split?

The supplementary pages have now been updated to include the latest set of full results, from the line of John & Christian(WOOD) FAIRBAIRN.
This includes a relatively major revamp of the dna signature chart for Lineage 1 "clump 2" incorporating this new knowledge - hopefully sensibly.
Any contributions to this interpretation are most welcome!

Looking at the marker results we now have available, I'm guessing that there was a split in the "clump 2" lines about the 1660s, where those including the above John, also James and Helen (GOODFELLOW), and F-11's James, can be deemed to have genetically split (slightly).
Take a look at the by now very wide signature chart and see if it makes sense to you.
(It also now includes the Eckford line of F-27).

The project is still very interested in finding representatives of other known lives to aid in piecing this huge jigsaw together - direct male line descendants of John and Helen (ANDERSON), and of the Ednam Blacksmith family with all the Edwards would be most welcome - and what about the Selkirk families?
Check out the Wanted! pages for some lines we are particularly interested in, but any not listed on the pages anywhere are also "wanted", just not yet documented.
Then of course there are the Yorkshire ones, are they related?

Subsidies for testing may be possible for the first of a line to test.
Those ineligible to join in the fun by reason of sex, or descended from a female line may help by contributing towards the subsidies - simply follow the "Contribute to the Surname Project General Fund" link on the lhs of our Family Tree DNA project pages.

23rd: DNA Signature for Archibald (marr. Alison CROSSER) FAIRBAIRN

We now have the full results for GD (F-29) the proven paper trail representative from the line of Archibald FAIRBAIRN (marr. Alison CROSSER).
Supplementary pages have been updated to include these results in the Overall DNA grid, and the DNA Signature Chart for Lineage 1 "Clump 1"
Summary result page also updated.

29th: Full results in for F-22

Michael(SIMPSON) F-22's full results are now in, and his page has been updated to include the Genetic Distance (GD) calcs.
Supplementary pages overall result grid also updated as is a preliminary attempt at joining him into the Lineage 1 "clump 2" dna signature chart.
Busy chap the FAIRBAIRN at the top of that tree.
A review is needed to check that the % calcs and generations to Most Recent Common Ancestor (MRCA) are all still in synch, and will be done when time permits.
Basically he is closest to our IRWINs, and to John (F-17) descendant of John and Jessie (JOHNSTON) FAIRBAIRN, and it is beginning to look as if a small subset of FAIRBAIRN descendants may share CDYb=39.

Lineage 1 "clump 2"

Ron (F-19)'s 37 marker results came hot on the heels of his 25 marker ones.

All pages have been updated, and some of the supplementary result, discussion and dna signature pages tweaked.

It looks like the line of Robert and Elizabeth (TAYLOR) FAIRBAIRN is typified by marker 460 = 11 (within those with 391 = 10), with Joe (F-10)'s branch of this line having a further identifier of marker CDYb=37.

At some stage in the future it would be good to get Ron's results up to 67 markers, although I expect from results to date, that they will match the modal values for 38 thru 67, ie those of (F-17)'s and Joe (F-10).

"clump 2" addition

Preliminary results (12 marker) now in for Ron (F-19). As expected, he is showing up a 12/12 match to his 3rd cousin Joe (F-10).
We are hoping that the panel of markers 26 thru 37 will help shed some light on the "Hoquiam Triangle".
Supplementary pages have been updated to include Ron(F-19)'s results, including the dna signature chart for Lineage 1 "Clump 2".

One of our missing in action kits has been reported as winging its way to the lab, so another Borders FAIRBAIRN family will soon be added to the jigsaw, that of James and Isabella (CAMPBELL) FAIRBAIRN.

14th: Still a good match for F-16

A few more panels of results in for Michael (F-16) still showing exact match to "clump 1", and an excellent match to "clump 2", further justifying John and Elisabeth (MILLER) FAIRBAIRN's positioning in the overall family.
The most interesting panel, markers 26-36 have yet to arrive.

DNA Signature chart for John and Bessie (fflint) FAIRBAIRN has been updated, as have the overall results on both the DNA Projects Portal supplementary pages, and the WFN summary pages.

More results; new features

Another panel of results in for Stan (F-15).
Not a very good match for the other representative of the R1b1+ haplogroup.

Also the full set of results are now in for Tom (F-13), showing one marker different to his proven by paper trail "cousin" Doug (F-6).

As the DNA Surnames Site Blog states, the dna sites have had a revamp and now include rather more of the dna result grids than before.
In addition, there are now some theoretical lineage charts where I've attempted to build trees for some of the lines/participants, given the dna evidence.
