The notifications over the last couple of days from FamilyTreeDNA for Y_DNA37 matches to many of our project members are from two new tested people who have tested Y-DNA37.
Neither are currently in the FAIRBAIRN project, neither are surnamed FAIRBAIRN or a variant thereof, both are shown as Genetic Distances of 3 or 4, at least to the kits checked.
One however may be adding to our group of matching ELLIOTs, where his ancestor is stated as being from Letterkenny Ireland (1836). An upgrade to Y-DNA67 would be in order to see how this match holds out over more markers.
For all interested in the FAIRBAIRN (and variants) surname - this blog is the project diary for both the One Name Study and the DNA Project.

Summary DNA results
The Summary DNA results page on the WorldFamilyNetwork was included in the recent updates to the related FAIRBAIRN pages (One Name Study and DNA pages).
The summary result page now includes the matching FARRIS representatives, who appear to create a bridge between Lineage 1a and all their matches sharing marker 391 = 10 but marker 520 = 20, and Lineage 1e who have 391 = 9 and 520 = 21.
It also has more of the results received to date for the descendant of Robert the Thames waterman, now shifted up in the grid next to the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRN family spot on the modal for all the Haplogroup I1 matches.

Match notifications
Looks like the results are starting to roll in from the Family Tree DNA upgrade sale a while ago.
One of our newer members upgraded from Y-DNA12 to Y-DNA67 and is now 25/25 with the Lineage 1 modal, ie all of Lineage I Haplogroup I1, and 24/25 with lineage 1e.
The next panel of results should enable us to get more of an idea on where to place his family of Thames watermen while we await his full results.
One of the FARRIS matches has now joined the FAIRBAIRN project and he looks to be more closely aligned to Lineage 1e as he shares slower marker 520 = 21with them.
Overall DNA grid on the supplementary pages has been updated to reflect the above.
Only 12 more days left for the summer sale if you know of any direct male line FAIRBAIRNs interested in exploring their family connections.
Pricing details on the DNA Surnames project diary.

FARRIS ?
A number of you will have received DNA Match email notifications today.
Looks like a FARRIS family from Virginia are starting to show up as excellent match with two representatives so far.
The two closest matches seem to be 65/67, but oddly enough they are to the lineage 1e member whose markers differ most, and to the modal over all the Lineage 1 matches.
Only one of the kits has any family information attached, earliest ancestor a William FARRIS, 1760-1833 Virginia.

Still journeying to the present
Those following the FAIRBAIRN DNA journey down from ancestral Adam (last post) to now, as opposed to back from the present, may be interested to know that the next step along the way has been completed.
Our selected representative for these tests, John (F-17) has had his SNP result returned as Z141+ which still has a few further options available in the march toward the present from the 3-4000 Years Before Present (YBP) this appears to be.
See the branching for this tree on both the ISOGG Haplogroup I1 tree, or for this portion of the tree, the more up to date files for the I1 Haplogroup project on Kenneth Nordtvedt's web pages - select "Tree for I1 Z60+".
We are embarking on this aspect of DNA testing to see if we can gain any further insights as to when the assorted matching branches we know we have actually diverged from a common ancestor.
But have a long way to go yet, both in selective testing, and in science finding more branches on the tree.

Spot on the modal
The final results are in for Bill (F-53) our representative for the Cockburnspath FAIRBAIRNs, which lineage is now awarded the prize for being closest to the modal over all of our Haplogroup I1 FAIRBAIRNs (who all match to some extent) - you can't get closer than spot on!
Up to know everyone had at least one marker different, several only on faster mutating markers.
This has prompted a review, and therefore a renumbering, of the I1 haplogroup lineages, which renumbering is incomplete insofar as the One Name Study pages haven't yet been updated to reflect this.
DNA Surnames has been reloaded with the above update, but does not as yet include a review of the signature charts, and does include a re-ordering of the overall marker grid to reflect the groupings based on slower mutating markers.
This update includes a few more of the older results being reviewed against their current genetic distance results, given that Family Tree DNA revised their matching methods, and the opportunity has been taken to trim the genetic distance matches back to just the more relevant/closer ones.
A few more broken links have been repaired - not doubt more to come.

Two matches
The previously referred to DNA match between the tree of William FAIRBAIRN, schoolmaster of Galashiels, represented in the DNA project by Michael (F-23), and that of John FAIRBARNES of Winlaton/Swalwell, Durham, represented by CJ (F-54) has been confirmed as an excellent match, 66 markers out of 67, so any shared ancestor should be well within genealogical timeframes.
Now to find the paper trail.
Jury still well out as to whether or not that means CJ's origins are Scottish, or those of John & Helen (ANDERSON) FAIRBAIRN, William's parents, were actually English!
The other match that is shaping up rather well is that of our representative for the Cockburnspath family of John & Helen (GRIEVE) FAIRBAIRN, who is an exact match, 47/47 so far, to the line of James & Helen (CAMPBELL) FAIRBAIRN, represented in the DNA project by David (F-9).
Confirming DNA signatures from another representative down a different line of descent to those already mentioned above would be fantastic. Please use the contact links at the bottom of most of the pages linked above to discuss this further if interested in doing your bit for the overall knowledge of how the FAIRBAIRNs connect.

DNA Update
The Supplementary DNA pages have been updated to include the newly received, complete t Y-DNA67, results from F-49, who is showing a good match to the Earlston/Mellerstain FAIRBAIRNs.
Several broken links on the analysis and signature chart pages have been corrected, and an additional signature chart, theoretical, included to show how some of our exact matches may connect.
We seem to also have found another ELLIOTT match, or rather one has found the FAIRBAIRNs, but at only 12 markers tested, it is too early to say how close the match is. Known info indicates an Irish ELLIOTT lineage.

Another Lineage 1b
Preliminary results have arrived for our latest DNA candidate, and at 12 markers, we have a 12/12 match to Lineage 1b, where he was hoped/expected to "fit".

Tweaks
Summary DNA result page has been republished to catch up with the more detailed DNA results which confirmed a dna signature for the line of John A FAIRBAIRN & Sarah DAUGHTERTY (see David F-46's DNA page)
The Patriarchs page likewise has had a few links changed to reflect the shift of lineage data from the DNA pages to the One Name Study (ONS) pages, and a few Edinburgh twigs included for the line of John & Alison (MOFFAT) FAIRBAIRN, which twigs are also included in their ONS lineage 1b4b descendant chart, that of Robert & Elizabeth (CROSBIE) FAIRBAIRN. John & Alison's son John was found working as a mason in Edinburgh (born Smailholm).

Confirmation
Preliminary dna results now in for David W Fairbairn (F-46). Thankfully they show him with a 12/12 match to his 2nd (and 4th) cousin, Michael E (F-12).
The rationalisation continues apace with a few more researchers, and trees, shifted from the DNA pages to the One Name Study pages. As noted before, apologies in advance for any broken links. Several have been fixed, but some more may have been created, particularly as the Lineage numbers are being reviewed given the growing number of results, and now more apparent clusters of matches.

Busy few weeks
Andrew (F-47)'s results have started arriving, resulting in several updates to the FAIRBAIRN related pages. We have a match with the "orphaned" Michael Rowland (F-23) FAIRBAIRN at last (in Haplogroup R1b1).
So somewhere, somehow, David (marr. to Peggy MERCER) FAIRBAIRN is related to John and Helen (ANDERSON) FAIRBAIRN.
Don't be surprised if there are broken links, or charts have disappeared. The results arrive in the middle of the, slow, rationalisation of the DNA and One Name Study pages so that lineage, wanted and researcher information is on the One Name Study pages, leaving DNA results and signature charts for the DNA pages.
If you have any particular people bookmarked, they are likely to change numbers sorry, to match those in the master database, which will make it easier to link from one site to the other.
The recent changes index on the DNA pages has been inflated somewhat by the realisation that somewhere along the way haplogroup numbering has changed, all those assigned to R1b1b2 now appearing as R1b1a2 instead on the Family Tree DNA results. Not all have been changed as yet.
Two other kits (F-46) and (F-48) are at the lab awaiting results, but not scheduled to produce any until December - placeholders exist on the Summary DNA results page.

"Crest" family a match
Preliminary dna results (markers 1 - 12) are in for Alastair (F-45), the representative whose ancestor was brother to the James FAIRBAIRN author/engraver of "Fairbairn's Crests of Great Britain and Ireland" fame.
12-12 match with the main, growing, set of matching FAIRBAIRNs, mostly traceable back to the Scottish Borders.
Both the Summary Results and FAIRBAIRN DNA Supplementary pages have been updated to reflect the above.

DNA results
Full results (Y-DNA37) now in for Bob (F-44) so the supplementary pages have had a few tweaks.
Check out the Recent changes index.
There are probably still more older analyses, descriptions etc that need an update by now. Some day, one with 48 hours in it.

9th: one step closer
With the first panel of results in for Bob (F-44) we appear to be one step closer to clarifying a contradictory paper trail.
With a bit of luck we will get an excellent match to F-42 and merge the Sacramento tree with that of John & Helen (ATCHESON) FAIRBAIRN
The summary results have been updated to include the above.
In addition, the patriarchs page has had a few twigs added namely:
- the inclusion of Thomas & Catherine (CHARTERS) FAIRBAIRN, the subject of this message on Rootsweb's Fairbairn message board.
- stub for the line of David, son of John & Elizabeth (YULE) FAIRBAIRN

23rd: Hardy lot these FAIRBAIRNs
Had to chuckle over a couple of American draft cards.
1917 exemption being claimed because of the loss of left arm and right foot
1942 same chap, under the heading physical characteristics which would aid identification: "none"
And his brother likewise:
1917 same day, both legs and an arm
1942 day after his brother, only left arm missing.
Should be classified as medical miracles?
That aside, an outline pedigree has been added to the Patriarchs page for our latest DNA recruit (F-44).
This is the family of a John & Isabella (BRACKEY) FAIRBAIRN, who are highly likely to be (despite many contradictions in the records) the John & Isabella (BROCKIE) FAIRBAIRN who appear in the chart of F-42, our latest 67/67 match.

Outline pedigree and dna results
More DNA results in, most of those for F-42, a representative of yet another Earlston/Greenlaw Berwickshire family.
Supplementary pages, and summary result pages updated, and an outline pedigree added to the Patriarchs page.
We are still missing one panel of these results, but those received to date place F-42 in Lineage 1 "clump 2", with fine tuning yet to come.
Family Tree DNA have announced an Upgrade discount promotion should anyone wish to explore what more markers will tell them about their connections.
The Family Finder test is also discounted - but only via dna projects by the look of Family Tree DNA's front page pricing, so make sure any orders are via your personal page.

9th: DNA Results
Two more of the DNA tests upgraded from 67 to 111 markers have now received their results.
The Supplementary DNA project pages have been updated to reflect the results.
Looks like very little variation in these higher markers to date, but we only have 3 test results so far.
Anyone else interested in comparing their results at this level should probably keep an eye out for any special offers that Family Tree DNA may make, either on their website or their facebook products page, which coincidentally seems to be about to run a promotion soon if they get 3000 more "likes" on facebook!
